The field of photography has become more and more accessible, with increased interest and awareness of its potential. However, most people still express apprehension on mastering the techniques involved. The thing about photography is that you have to learn as much as you can about the subject to improve your skills. The following tips will help you build your knowledge base about this popular hobby.
Take your pictures quickly. If you wait too long, you risk losing your shot due to changing scenery. Taking pictures faster is better.
Play around with shutter speeds to determine which work best during what situations. You can capture moments that happen in a blip or blur larger time periods together. Using a faster shutter speed will let you catch objects while they are in motion, while a slow shutter speed is great for capturing serene natural settings.
A lot of people consider gorgeous days of abundant sunshine to be ideal for snapping good photos, but direct sunlight is actually a good way to mess up a good picture. Direct sunlight not only causes glare and unpleasant shadows, but it also creates irregular highlights and makes your subjects squint if they facing the sun. Outdoor shooting is always done best in early mornings or later evenings.
Experiment with you camera’s shutter speed settings. Shutter speed settings are an important feature of your camera. On your SLR camera there are several settings; S, A, M and P. The ‘P’ button will take you to the program mode. This is the fully automatic setting of your camera, and it sets the aperture and shutter speed automatically for you. If you have no idea what settings you want, “P” is a safe choice!
When shooting people, make sure to emphasize the foreground by blurring the background a little. If your background is focused it might take some focus off of your subject. If you put some distance between your background and your subject, it helps viewers focus on the subject of your photograph.
Quite often, digital cameras have an automatic flash function that automatically goes off when the light is dim. This is fine for casual snapshots, but if you want more professional results, you need the wider lighting options you can get by using an external flash. If your camera will accept an external flash (look for a “hot shoe”), a photo shop can set you up with a model to sync with your camera.
Now that you know what skills are required to become a better photographer, you should start practicing those skills regularly. The more ideas you apply, the better your results will be.
